Marlysa D. Gamblin is a dynamic public speaker, a racial equity coach, and a thoughtful researcher. She has gone, and continues to go, around the country to speak on these issues, share the tools that she has designed, and encourage people, churches, businesses and nonprofits to promote racial equity.
When she was 14 years old, God gave Marlysa a vision of what she would be doing with her life--dismantle racism in the U.S. From that point forward, Marlysa was committed to listening to God and discerning God’s voice to walk into this calling--from the college she attended, to the major she selected, to the subsequent cities and positions she pursued, and to the tools she has been inspired to design. Everything has been an expression of her obedience to God’s direction in her life.
Marlysa has designed many tools and founded spaces that help to further this mission. She is Founder and CEO of GamblinConsults, LLC, a racial consulting company that provides support to businesses, organizations and networks to help them strengthen their internal practices and externally-facing work. She is also the founding co-chair of the Racial Equity & Hunger National Learning Network, a network of over 1,000 people across anti-hunger organizations. Through her channel on YouTube, Marlysa speaks about faith, racism, and lifestyle, as well as the intersection of these three topics.
Some of the major tools that Marlysa has designed include the Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation, an interactive tool that has helped more than 2 million people understand how structural racism was created, which has helped them initiate the conversation of racism in their community; the Racial Equity Policy and Programs Scorecard, a tool that helps people rate how well a policy or program is promoting racial equity; and the Racial Equity Methodology, a tool that helps researchers understand how to apply racial equity into their methodologies and research practices.
Marlysa is also the author of several leading reports, including her most recent report titled "Racially Equitable Responses to COVID-19." She has been published in various outlets including the African American Public Policy Journal of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and The Christian Citizen. Marlysa has also been interviewed by radio stations and news outlets across the U.S. broadcasting to over 8 million people and counting.
Marlysa has previously staffed on the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships during the Obama Administration, where she proposed key recommendations to the White House on race, justice, and poverty. She also chaired the Economic Empowerment work for the NAACP DC Branch, where she piloted the “Starting a Black Business 2-Month Capacity Building Program.” This program provided weekly classes and a modest amount of start-up funds to aspiring Black entrepreneurs. It also paired these participants to Black entrepreneur mentors working in the same field and walked them through the Black Business Start-Up Toolkit that Marlysa and her team designed. She also worked on Capitol Hill where she drafted legislation aimed at supporting Black men and boys.
Marlysa is the proud wife to Anthony N. Gamblin. Together they have helped to support the marriage ministry in their church, and also help lead their small groups. Marlysa is very passionate about helping people become closer with God and engages in this work in various ways, including through her upcoming book, titled “Prayer Warrior.” This book provides a series of testimonies showing the power of prayer and the journey of how to go deeper into your faith.
Marlysa holds her Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a B.A. with honors from the University of California, Berkeley.
